Curator Corner: Economy Lumber Sign

It is not every day that a door walks through your door.  The History Center was recently contacted by a Cedar Rapids resident who had moved into a new house and found an unusual artifact in his basement.  The house where the artifact was found originally belonged to Dale McDonald, who turned this door sign into his basement workshop table.

Not every artifact that is brought into the History Center is in pristine condition.  As you can see, the bottom left corner of the sign had been cut out when being converted into a tabletop.  We were very excited to see this sign come to the History Center and, with a little bit of cleaning, have brought back some of its brightness.

The building where this sign would have hung was located at 408 1st St. SE. This building was torn down in 1982 and was where the Cedar Rapids Ground Transportation Center stands today.
